SUSAN ATKINS SLEEPS THROUGH HER COURT ORDEAL

In complete contrast to the recent release of terminally ill Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset Ali Mohamed Al Megrahi, dying 'Manson Family' member Susan Atkins has been denied parole for the 18th time.

Atkins was convicted nearly four decades ago for her part in the notorious Manson murders where five people, including that of heavily pregnant actress Sharon Tate, the wife of filmmaker Roman Polanski, were brutally killed.

The 61-year-old, who suffers from brain cancer and, according to her lawyer, is also paralysed over much of her body, had to be wheeled into the make-shift courtroom at the Central California Women's prison where she is being held, on a movable bed.

DOES THIS STORY MAKE ME PROUD OF SCOTLAND'S DECISION.

FUCKING RIGHT IT DOES!

I'm personally against the release but what I'd like to say is I'm sick of hearing blogs and likewise websites say "the Scots did this" and "the Scots did that" as if Scottish citizens are to blame.

When the government in London do really shit things do we write as if all the people of England are actively taking part?

How many people do they think live up here? Twenty?

I can understand your feelings Shibs if you don't support the SNP. If you do I suppose you tend to take their decision as being the country's. I think however it's quite nice to see a Western Government making a decision based on some other criteria than if it pleases America. Makes a change from "British" labour sucking up their arseholes.

Sorry I didn't mean that to be a direct attack on what you personally said; I was just remarking on these American/English blogs acting like all Scots took part.

Especially that ridiculous USA site about boycotting Scotland. When the American government does something we don't agree with do we blame all Americans?

For me, it's not that I don't agree with the principle of Compassionate Release, but if we're to assume the trial was safe and he is therefore guilty, there was no way in hell he deserved to be free.

(Btw SNP? Whyyy oh whyyyy?)

Shibby, not taken as such. If Scotland was an independent country and it is my fervent hope that one day it will be then I would be happy to stand up and say that any decision taken by my countrymen in my Parliament even if the fucking Greens were in charge was taken, as a Scot, in my name.

Thomas, why the SNP? Well after 55 years on this earth it is my belief rightly or wrongly that Scotland would be better off independent. This is based on a myriad of reasons which are too many to go into on a comments page, maybe one day I'll write them down as an entire post! I therefore support the SNP as currently they are the best hope of achieving independence. I don't want to be independent because of some hatred of the English or anything xenophobic but because I think our national beliefs and characteristics would be better served if we took our own decisions. However after independence, my support would probably migrate towards a right of centre party, although my opinions change all the time. I have never supported the CND for instance but I don't see the point of Trident. So that's why I currently support the SNP.

We'll have to be careful and not do a Ted Kennedy on Megrahi. Beatification of a man who was a Libyan intelligence agent is a bit OTT. He would almost certainly have been involved in torture and murder of opponents of the Libyan regime. All press and newspapers are government controlled. There is no opposition or free speech. Arbritary execution and torture are frequently mentioned in the amnesty annual reports. Although he wasn't involved in Lockerbie he will meet his maker with other blood on his hands.
