SCOTTISH BEVVY FIGURES ARE A NATIONAL DISGRACE

SOME of the most deprived parts of Glasgow have an alcohol related death rate more than five times the UK average, official figures show. The figures show five city constituencies in the 10 highest for drink related deaths. Shettleston, which includes much of the East End, is the worst in Scotland, with 76 deaths per 100,000 population. Across the UK it is 13.3. Maryhill is more than four times the UK rate while Springburn, Baillieston and Govan are also in the 10 worst.

Only nine constituencies in Scotland were below the UK average, with Tweeddale, Ettrick and Lauderdale, in the Borders, the lowest at just four per 100,000 people.

The 10 highest as a percentage of UK average were: Shettleston 574; Maryhill 420; Greenock/Inverclyde 371; Dundee East 347; Springburn 333; Baillieston 331; Cathcart 292; Govan 289; Paisley 288; Hamilton N/ Bellshill 285.

Evidence in my estimation that something must be done soon to stop ridiculously high percentage of our citizens from dying from the bevvy. If that means squeezing the price of cheap Cider and Alcopops, then that's what we must do. Youngsters are getting hooked on this cheap drink and when you mix it with drugs it becomes a lethal combination. I know BTW because I drunk like a fish for 36 years and I am regretting it now!

It's time we gave people hope and some light at the end of the tunnel in their lives so that they DON'T HAVE TO WASTE THEMSELVES GETTING PISHED OUT OF THEIR BRAINS EVERY DAY!

Cost shouldn't be the issue DL. One of the delights of going abroad is that beer, wine and spirits are way below the cost in the UK. Do you see drunks falling about everywhere ? Or smashing things up and fighting ?Well apart from holiday areas frequented by Brits. No, you don't. I wouldn't try it in Germany or Poland because I've seen the result. Paramilitaries throw you in the back of their van and beat the shit out of you.
Rather than making us all pay more for drink why not just punish the drunks and thugs properly ? Stop benefits, imprisonment or heavy fines.
Way too hard I suppose with all the human rights bollox we have to adhere to. If a drunk was put in jail for a month every time he urinated in public or started a fight then it would stop quite quickly. At the moment they're either driven home or put in the cells to sober up overnight. Have a good laugh about it in the morning and carry on as usual.
Hopeless !

I agree with your sentiments 100%. The trouble in this country and increasingly in England is our attitude to drink.. We think we have to get pished every time we go out for a bevvy. It's just not the young. I've got a mate acsross the road, an ex professional footballer who won't drink for weeks on end but once in a while he'll go into Ayr, meet some of his mates and get miroculous, and he's 68. Until two years ago this month, I was drinking close to a bottle of Vodka 7 nights a week for 30 YEARS. I never thought anything about it, I was a heavy drinker, full stop. BTW you'd very rarely see me pished. My liver drank for Scotland. It wasn't until I started to get a few health problems it dawned on me I'd better get a grip, which I have done, but it was too late for my health. It's a very easy trap to fall into. Now as an ex heavy drinker I can see the signs in others right away. Maybe I should become a councillor!

There's no doubt that we have a huge bevvy problem. I don't know what the answer is, but it aint price.

DL I must admit I like a good drink at weekends but I screw the nut through the week. I was in the Forces so drinking was part of the culture. The recovery period is a lot longer now so my body must be telling me something. I've never drunk spirits though. Just beer or lager.
I can't see the Scottish culture of getting steaming ever changing. Drinking in rounds is part of the problem. Being tight jocks we can't abide the thought of sitting out a round. Or getting slagged off for not keeping up with everyone else.

Lockemup you maske a very good point about drinking in rounds. I agree, I don't think the Scots will ever change their drinking philosophy and we seem to have exported it around the world, if you'll excuse the pun.
