Greedy energy giants are to be investigated after revelations of a 38 per cent rise in profit margins on the back of soaring bills.
Industry regulator Ofgem is to investigate Britain’s ‘big six’ energy companies – many foreign-owned – amid allegations of profiteering on a massive scale.
The average profit margin per customer has leapt from £65 to £90 since September, taking it to the highest level in five years.
OOOOAGH! A lot of fucking difference that will make. Pure window dressing by a Government which has proffered it's arse to big business, just like the last lot did.
TIME FOR REVOLUTION!

I was listening to this all day on BBC Radio 2; it's a smoke & mirrors job getting out the idea that fuel price rises are the fault of greedy foreign profiteers to hide the stealth taxes being imposed on fuel in the name of Tackling Climate Change.
I will say however that when in London, EDF energy, a French company put a cap on French nationals energy bills in France, yet continued to increase the cost in the UK. Ergo, the British energy user of EDF was subsidising the French.
My electric bill in Dundee for one person in a flat with just myself paying for a computer, fridge freezer, lights and hot water is more expensive than when I lived in London with another person running 2 computers, fridge freezer, two TV's, hot water etc etc. How does that work?
In a nutshell we're being ripped off.
Harbringer is right about the foreign manipulation, as many European countries have domestic and business price caps. The problem is this is what happens when you sell your utility companies to foreigners. The deregulation of the energy market has not benefited this country Enron in America pointed the way to energy price manipulation by their borderline illegal activities in California. For the UK its another sad story of wasted resources as our own gas is sold cheap abroad and imports are highly priced. I think we become net importers of gas in 2015. When I lived in Indonesia which was once the largest exporter of natural gas they became net importers as a result of lack of investment and overexploitation of a few old fields. Now much of Europe depends on Gazprom in Russia and they have already in the past shown their willingness to switch supplies to Germany when there is a squeeze in the market which naturally causes a price hike in our uncapped market. Selling utility companies to foreign owners seems a poor business to me but check which countries actually own our Electricity, gas and water companies. France and Germany are very well represented.
Banned, smoke and mirrors right enough. Green taxes are going to cost us all, millions, whilst China our forthcoming competitor with cheap labour and the skill to copy and innovate is opening a coal fired power plant every week.
Harbinger, we are being ripped off something terrible. I changed from E-on to EDF recently and saved £250 per year and I had swapped to them from British Gas. I pay £115 per month, every month for energy even though I have cavity wall insulation in a semi. Time we had a Scottish National energy company which could give Scottish Customers lower energy rates through all this gas and electricity generating capacity, we're supposed to have.
EDF sells electricity in France far more cheaply than in Britain because there they use Nuclear reactors for 90% of production whereas Britain is lumbered with clapped out soon to be decommissioned expensive coal, gas and dung burning plants.
Their Chief Executive was 'grilled' on telly about it and gave the reporter a right roasting.
EDF has huge experience in building nuclear reactors which is why they will win the contracts to build such plants in Britain shortly.
And no, I am not pro Frog nor in the pay of Big Electricite
(was that ok Ms. Henri? You know where to wire the cash).
DL,
£115 a month for energy? That's fucking obscene and I really mean that.
Banned, it's ok because you might have heard Scotland has got 40% of the European renewables, which may be valuable if we don't let Westminster piss the tax against the wall this time round. Mind you it is a hugely costly industry and is not guaranteed to work, mind you there will be quite a few jobs associated with it. We've even got the solution to coal fired power stations because we just for the co2 down half depleted oil wells and that pushes the rest of the oil out. Simples! Just got to get some cunt to spend money on it first.
Harbingers, I do like a warm house though and we both have showers every day.
DL but renewables is all bollox except for hydro which was maxed out in the 70's.
Banned, actually you're wrong there. I was reading a thing the other day about Hydro and I can't remember where, but seemingly they have devised some new pump or some fucking thing which is so much more efficient than the old ones and will make Hydro the fuel of the future.
That is good news, re Hydro. I've got a bit of a pissy stream at the bottom of my garden and it would be great if I could use it in the fight against manmadeglobalwarming.
Banned, I've got a gadget rigged up to the bog, that I piss through and it gives me enough electricity to make a slice of toast. The toast is soggy and salty, but I'm working on it!
