THIS DRUNKEN ORGY IN OUR TOWNS AND CITIES HAS TO STOP!

Alcohol-fuelled violence and loutish behaviour has become the modern-day 'plague' of Britain, a top judge warned today.
District Judge Alan Berg said young women, in particular, who were intent on getting 'senselessly drunk,' were behind a dramatic escalation of mindless violence on the nation's streets.    Mr Berg spoke out just days after jailing high-flying university student, Melissa Massey, 20, for a booze-fuelled attack on a female paramedic.  The judge branded Massey a 'drunken barbarian' and said he had no choice but to imprison her to try and curb the growing tide of barbaric behaviour in city centres.

Quite right too.  I don't want to sound like an OLD FART, but as someone in their 50s, I am concerned about going out for a drink in our towns and cities.  FUCK ME!  It's a bit much when you can't go out for a drink with your wife, without worrying constantly about some drunken yob who feels you looked at him the wrong way!  GLASGOW, which I know in particular is a nightmare.  For too long our COURTS have accepted the excuse that someone who has been arrested was drunk.  Well, who's fault is that?  Most people go out with the intention of getting pissed and I sorry you guys who bleat about MINIMUM ALCOHOL PRICING, but they are tanked up on CHEAP SUPERMARKET DRINK before they go out, which only exacerbates the problem.

NO LONGER, SHOULD BEING DRUNK BE TAKEN AS AN EXCUSE.  PEOPLE HAVE TO TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR OWN LIVES.

DL, the Police should get on with enforcing existing laws that apply to pissed up slags and Neds. Minimum pricing would primarily affect small corner shops, see below.

Terry Leahy, CEO Tesco PLC, reckons banning below cost retailing of alcohol is a good thing, well he would say that wouldn't he? Being by far the UKs biggest retailer Tesco can command discounts fom suppliers way above most of their competitors, if smaller outlets are not allowed to sell for less than they pay, Tesco will be able to make one penny per unit and still undercut small shops by a very wide margin and in this way Tesco will soon become the monopoly supplier in any area that they operate.

They could double supermarket alcohol prices and it would have no effect on the yob culture.
If the existing laws were enforced properly it would be eradicated overnight.
Why is there no drunken yob culture on the streets of Berlin, Krakow and Barcelona ?
Because the yobs know what would happen to them.
The minimum alcohol pricing is a red herring and will tax the majority of poor people who don't cause trouble and force them further down the alcohol food chain to home made spirits and cheap ciders and the black market.
And of course with all taxes the only way is up.

I was totally pished yesterday, for the first time in a long while.

I managed to refrain from causing mayhem.

That judge is part of the problem. If you google him and look at his history he's been bleating on about this for years but hasn't changed his sentencing ( 4 weeks to a drunk who pulled lumps of hair out of a female paramedic's head - he could have given her two years. ). I think he likes to get in the papers but doesn't like to sentence people properly.
He was the one who dealt with the Rangers riots in Manchester and various Jeremy Kyle related fights.

Banned, I read your rant the other day about minimum pricing. I am making the point that it is no longer good enough to be saying, "I didn't mean to slash the nice Ambulanceman's face your honour I was drunk" To be honest with you I resent you running a campaign on your blog trying to change the votes on a SCOTTISH CHARITY SURVEY about whether the calorific value of alcohol should be shown on the bottle. You also ran a campaign on minimum pricing IN SCOTLAND. Now while I don't want to fall out with you on this and we both have fairly entrenched positions on it, Alcohol is a particular problem in Scotland and has been for a long time. England is 20 years behind the culture we have here. Health is devolved to the Scottish Parliament and quite frankly it is none of your fucking business. In the same way that SNP Mps don't vote in English affairs in Westminster and I certainly don't think any Scots MPs should interfere in purely English affairs like Health or Education, you should keep your nose out of purely Scottish affairs. So put that in your fucking pipe and smoke it! ;-)

Poor taxers, personally I would legalise drugs as well and give them away for nothing and give the poor as much cheap cider as they wanted. I'm sure they would be able to behave themselves and the idea that we would have to build five times as many jails to house the druggies and alcohol fuelled violent offenders is just ridiculous.

Roberto, the difference is that you and I can get pished without wanting to slash someone or get in a fight with an ambulanceman trying to help us. That is the difference. If you have a predilection to be violent, alcohol only exacerbates it. We've either got to lock them up for a while or look at other avenues, but it can't continue.

My honourable Judgers, If he is just bleating them get him off the circuit. He seemingly though gave this bird two years and she appealed it and got it suspended, so maybe he is starting to follow his principles.

DL.
You wouldn't need to build 5 more jails at all. The reason people cause trouble when they're drunk is because there is NO DETERRENT. These drunks are actually mostly regular people who don't normally cause trouble. The student who pulled that female paramedics hair out is a case in point. A first class student who knew that nothing would happen to her if she went out and got blootered. Against the odds she actually got jailed. Imagine her attitude if she knew that she would get jailed if she lost her senses through drink. She would have gone out with a different attitude. The attitude that you see in Europe where ALCOHOL IS MUCH CHEAPER THAN IN SCOTLAND. Jailing the first hundred or so drunks for a year WOULD BE A DETERRENT that would stop the rest of them.
I just don't underatand why you can't see this. Is there something you don't understand about what I'm saying ?

She got 8 weeks reduced to 4 weeks for good behaviour. But she's even appealing that.

Another taxers, sorry I was being sarcastic. I agree with you completely that people should be jailed. That is the point I made in the main post. Drunks should take the responsibility for their own actions. But I think you are being very naive, if you believe that locking up a 100 drunk would stop the problem. Maybe giving 100 drunks, 6 months in jail in every town and city in the UK might have some impact, but that would amount to around say, 2,000,000 million people getting locked up. What do we do do. Release a few rapists or murderers to make the space?

Well I just think that making an example of the first few would be a start and may deter others. I've looked at some recent figures for 'drunk and incapable'...

SCOTLAND

Central Scotland
2003/4: 40
2004/5: 44
2005/6: 31
2006/7: 30

... and it's roughly about 30 a week in Scotland. Give them a year in jail in an emergency court procedure with no delay for reports etc and I'm sure the figures would start to drop as people became worried about losing their job and freedom.

It doesn't help when our MSPs' pontificate but don't actually do anything. It's understandable with MacAskill as he's been in jail himself for alleged drunk and disorderly ( football match in London in 2000 ) and enjoys cover ups so he may be biased. But if we get a new justice minister in the future then I'm sure we could sort this out.

Dark Lochnagar said...

Taxers, fuck me they like a bevvy in Inverness! Fuck all population and more arrests than Strathclyde. I wonder if there are more drunks there or is it just that the police arrest more? If the same figures were duplicated across Scotland there would be probably about 20 times that in Strathclyde. Remember that the crime of being 'drunk and incapable' is only one of the things that someone who is pished can be arrested for. Instances of assault for instance would probably count higher. Then you have drunk driving, causing an affray etc. etc.

MacAskill's offence was inexcusable for a man who was in his position, but speaking as someone who has been well 'refreshed' several times at fitba matches, I have some understanding of his predicament! Although I have never been arrested, I sailed close to the wind once, not for violence I would hasten to add, but the experience taught me a lesson as I'm sure it did with him!
