SCOTTISH OIL RESERVES 'UNLIMITED'-INDUSTRY SPOKESMAN

SCOTTISH OIL RESERVES HIGHER THAN PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT

Commenting on the survey by the offshore industry association, Oil and Gas UK , which finds that North Sea oil and gas reserves are practically unlimited, SNP MP and Energy Spokesperson Mike Weir said that future revenues from oil should be invested for Scotland 's future.

Mr Weir warned that the lessons of the 1970's, when London politicians claimed the reserves would not last long, must be remembered and made the case for the establishment of an oil fund to secure the benefits of oil revenues for future generations.  Commenting Mr Weir said:  "Scotland's oil and gas industry is the only thing keeping the London Treasury afloat - over the next six years, £50 billion worth of North Sea revenues will flow to the London exchequer.  "That alone represents over £20,000 for every household in Scotland .

"The London politicians must not think it they can fool the people of Scotland again"!

It may be piped ashore in Scotland, but what makes you think it's Scottish oil? It's pumped from under the North Sea.

Good news for a change.

FK FK ORF!

All very well Scunnert but do you really believe that the revenues will be handed lock, stock and barrel,so to speak, over to a small, insignificant, pipsqueak state whose existence comprises of a net drain on whoever has to continue to prop them up?

Conan the Librarian™ said...

No of course not FK; Scotland will have them, not England.

I mean no insult, and recognise Scotland's impressive record in the fields of science, literature, engineering, philosophy, philanthropy, culture and the arts. History show's that Scotland has punched far above it's weight for a small population.
But that is history and in the harsh reality of the modern day an independant Scotland would become just another minor player in the big boy's game. Britain's national debt divided up into regional bills would leave you with an unpayable account.
Strength through unity. We have more that unites us than divides.

Oli, That would not be good for your liver. However you can spend your £20k how you want.

Finders Keepers, true but from Scottish Waters.

Scunnert, Yes with that and 25% of all European renewable power, the future is looking good for a change if we don't let Westminster piss it up against the wall like they have been doing since the 70s.

Conan, well said.

Finders, I think when Scotland breaks away from the Union and we get to work out what our 8.4% share of the total British assets bought since 1707, like Embassies, art treasures, the armed forces, Downing Street etc. Well the list is endless but I am no accountant but suffice to say that I am sure there will be more than enough to pay our 8.4% of the National Debt and probably with quite a bit left over. As we were instrumental in building the Empire and as you say punching above our weight, then I am sure a grateful England will be pleased to see us on our way with a merry quip and a smile because, they will be able to look after their own affairs without those nasty Scots having to come down from Scotland to lead them. Should of course any of the aforementioned oil, which has been propping up British Governments since the 70s, be found to fall into English waters then we will help you extract it , for a fee of course, because after all we have so much of it west of Shetland and in the Clyde which hasn't been touched yet it would be churlish to grudge you it. Then we will be able to use our oil money wisely like they have in Norway and build up a fund which actually helps the Scottish people live in , for instance, old age comfortably and pain free.

Finders, in the spirit of 'who props who up' you might like to go to http://www.siol-nan-gaidheal.org/obfuscation.htm and have a shufty there. If you need more info, just give me a shout.

"True but from Scottish waters" How far out do Scottish waters reach?
Only the imbeciles lay the blame for the nations ills on "nasty Scots". We have as many per head of population as you no doubt have, but to borrow Osbornes phrase,we're all in it together.
Tractor stats mean whatever the presenter wants them to. Our Prime Minister demonstrates that every week at PMQ's. But can you imagine the row over who gets what. It would make for one hell of a messy divorce. And the belief that the SNP can call the shots over the oil giants is a scenario straight from Brigadoon.
The point i make is that a small independant nation carries no clout in the world of the bloc vote and would diminish Scotlands voice as well as Englands.
I do find it ironic that Scottish nationalism is considered patriotic whereas British nationalism is regarded as an abomination.

Finders, Ah but. It is also ironic that most English Conservatives and a good percentage of people who are inclined to vote for the other parties want to leave the EU. And the reason is .... because they don't want to be 'suffocated by a bigger entity than them. They are however not able to understand how many Scots feel being buried in the Union. When the EU talk about for instance having an integrated Army/Embassies/taught history/immigration which is common to all people in the EU, then they are up in arms because they want their own customs and institutions. Don't get me wrong. I don't want to be part of the EU either, I would rather be a small independent country like Norway or Switzerland trading with the EU but not part of it. Don't you kid yourself, the oil companies would quickly fall into line if Scotland was independent. One benefit which is still as far as I know to be explored is the fact that the the various 'bits' of the Union could be able to legally leave the EU after Scottish independence because the entity of the 'UK' ceases to exist therefore they cannot be members of the EU.

The only problem with this oil is that production costs will be far greater than for around mainland Scotland.

Maybe if London can get the Falklands oil out cheaply they'll not want ours.

Ever since they discovered North Sea Oil it has been about to run out just before they find some more.
I sometimes come across oil workers on leave and they mostly expect to see their careers out in Aberdeen.
DL, do you seriously expect Westminster to let the Scots people go free before the oil runs out? You, my friend, might have to make a hard choice, oil or independence.

Dark Lochnagar said...

Rosie, oil is not a tax but to be more correct is a 'duty' which is paid every time a tanket leaves the refinery gates. The cost of production although important to the oil company for them to make a profit is not important to the government for them to make money from the 'duty'. They can of course offer tax breaks so that the company is encouraged to drill for the oil in the first place but with the margin in duty there is that is not insurmountable. the oil after all is not going anywhere and as production costs come down it will become more attractive to the oil companies.

Dark Lochnagar said...

Banned, I'm sorry but the oil lies in Scottish waters and therefore is an asset of an independent Scotland. Now if we didn't have oil then there would be no doubt that we wouldn't be as keen to become independent. Westminster Governments have been propped up with oil since the 70s and in Scotland when we look at what has happened in Norway with the same oil we would say the asset has been squandered. There's no Norwegian Grannies freezing to death because they can't afford to put on the heating.

No such thing as British Nationalism , FK .

Old Adolph gets the definition right in Mein Kampf -
Nationalism is ethnic , as in his lot ,
Patriotism is down to the local area , religion , culture and Monarch .

I'm a British patriot .
